Social media is playing a prominent role in everyday business, including the use of paid influencers. This explores the legal protections you need while wearing the multiple hats of being a business owner/operator/decision maker at the same time. This reviews the protections provided by trademark law including selection and registration of a mark for branding growth. Also, a review of creating and protecting original marketing materials (photos and videos) that are protected by copyright. This includes a lesson on who actually owns that creative work and the needed contracts for protection. Lastly a review of current social media pitfalls through the lens of intellectual property concepts and a discussion about the FTC rules for using influencers. These topics are especially important global strategies of asset valuation, business growth, asset growth and intellectual property protection.
